By offering interest-free loans rather than charity, Hebrew Free Loan helps people become, and remain, self-sufficient.
While the philosophy is simple, it is based on a biblical mandate from G-d to the Jewish people. In Parashat Mishpatim, G-d tells Moses and the people of Israel that they may not derive personal benefit from loans made to members of their community. In other words, they may not charge interest. This is the foundation — the inspiration — for our work.
